![]() Seeing the same old shortcomings having to be addressed once more in the GC review today has just solidified my frustration with the series.ĭisney are obviously very naughty but they know how to spin a tight yarn, it surprises me they don’t seem to have tried to get Square to rein it in a bit. That was 17 years ago though and I think the industry is sort of over that particular hang-up, but the sequels, the ones I’ve played anyway, have done little to try and fix this. I’m not really sure who it was appealing to and it smacked of being self-conscious about featuring children’s characters. I’ve completely forgotten what the Heartless were supposed to be, who Ansem and Xehanort were, what Rikku was doing and more or less every other detail of the story, but I know that I didn’t care and that it all added up to a banal, clunkily explained mess. The exposition was efficient enough, however I didn’t like the way that Square saw fit to add layer upon convoluted layer of uninteresting fat to the story thereafter. ![]() Plucky young lad travels through magical lands, righting wrongs and trying to reunite with friends, aided by larger than life magical creatures – classic setup really. The narrative I actually thought was great in theory. I was mad for Final Fantasy at the time so seeing all those characters was fun. I thought it was really atmospheric, looked great, sounded great and all the mechanics had that reassuring Square Enix polish to them. ![]() The submission the other day from reader Corktown had got me thinking about how the whole series is a bit of a nearly franchise in my eyes. Square Enix ostensibly not wanting Kingdom Hearts III to be widely reviewed at launch was suspicious.
